A Brief History of Newcastle Airport

Newcastle Airport opened in 1935

Newcastle International Airport started life in 1935 as a grass runway, club house and a hangar. The first scheduled service to use the Newcastle International Airport was a London to Perth service.

The early growth of Newcastle International Airport was slow, with a total of 35 services a week being operated by 1952.

North East's Major Airport

In the 60's the travel industry saw a boom in holidaymakers heading for the sunshine and Newcastle International Airport became established as the North East's major airport.

By the late 1960's the airport was handling 700,000 passengers per year. By the mid 70's the Airport terminal was again bulging at the seams and more and more people were trying to squeeze their way through a building now too small. The first jumbo jet arriving at the Newcastle signalled the airport 's potential to play in the intercontinental league.

New Terminal

The continued growth of Newcastle International Airport required an additional 2400 surface-level car-parking spaces and the extended and improved terminal building which was opened in May 1994 by the Princess Royal.

New Airport Company

On 4th May 2001 a further major step for the development of Newcastle International Airport was taken by the 7 local authority shareholders when 49% of the shares in the Airport Company were sold to Copenhagen Airport, thus ensuring a truly International Newcastle Airport.
